There are numerous human resources job opportunities available today. The field includes human resource and training specialists and labor relations managers and specialists. In 2008 there were over 900,000 human resources jobs in the United States alone. These jobs included human resources, training and labor relations specialists, compensation, benefits and job analysis specialists, employment, recruitment and placement specialists and training and development specialists. Almost every industry employs people specializing in human resources, training and labor relations because this field is essential for the welfare and success of the company. Some managers and specialists actually are self-employed and work as consultants to private and public employers. Most of the human resources jobs are held by specialists in the private sector in administrative, professional, healthcare, insurance and manufacturing organizations. Even the federal government employs human resources managers and specialists to oversee employee relations. These specialists handle recruitment, interviewing, job classification, training, salary, administration, benefits, employee relations and other human resources functions for state and federal employees. The field of human resources is expected to grow faster than other occupations in the future. Of course, the best jobs will be available for college graduates who have taken the time to become HR certified.

Many people are attracted to human resource careers but are unsure of what qualifications are required. They are not knowledgeable as to what exactly will be expected of them if they are hired into an human resources position. Many large organizations today have top management personnel that simply do not have the time to work one on one with their employees. That is why these companies often hire human resources, training and labor relations specialists and managers to act as liaisons. These HR specialists provide the connection and are invaluable to the company’s success. Human resource management combines administrative personnel functions with employee relations and resource planning. Human resources development is viewed as an important function of the HR department because it increases employee morale and productivity of the company. HR specialists hire, fire, train and work with employees on personnel issues related to the working environment. Human resources can be very rewarding and exciting and it is one of the fastest growing career choices you can make. The number of human resource jobs that will be available in the future is expected to increase dramatically. The median income for careers in human resources is currently above the national average.

Human resources positions include the unique specialization of HR employee relations. As an employee relations director, you will be expected to write policies, oversee employee labor relations, work with collective bargaining (if applicable), and handle employee grievances and concerns. You will need to be knowledgeable in wages, benefits, pensions and work processes so that you can convey reliable information to employees and upper management. You might even take part in contract negotiation if your business is unionized. If so, you will be asked to prepare important information for management to use in the collective bargaining process. As such, you will need to be familiar with labor laws and wage data. As the contract is being negotiated, you will be asked to interpret employee grievances, salary information, employee welfare, health and pension plans and other stipulations. Non-union shops also have employee relation specialists who work with employees on dispute resolution. This often eliminates costly litigation costs to the company. Another exciting specialization in employee relations focuses on international human resources. These specialists work with the company’s foreign operations. A final employee relations specialization focuses on information systems and requires someone who has the innate ability to process human resources information effectively.

Most large organizations today have a separate human resources department that specializes in employee training and development. If this is an area that interests you, then there are some things you should know before you start on your human resources job search. Training and development personnel conduct and supervise training programs for the employees of the organization. Without this specialized training department, other employees would have to take time away from their jobs to train new employees which would result in decreased productivity. Large companies now recognize that HR training helps to increase employee productivity and improve quality of work. Also, these companies see that well-trained employees tend to be more loyal and are likely to stay with them for longer periods of time. Morale increases when employees are well trained in the jobs they are assigned to do. Enhancing individual skills is an employee benefit that today’s companies recognize as imperative to the success of their business. This is especially true of many complex businesses that exist today. Technological changes and rapid growth make employee training essential in order for businesses to remain competitive. New skills are needed every day just to keep up with the changing working environment.

Human resource careers are just waiting for the right person. If this is a field that interests you, it is to your advantage to learn all you can about it. Human resource careers include a variety of specialists who focus on training, labor relations and staff functions. The front person in an HR department is usually known as a human resources generalist who works specifically with all aspects of human resources work. The generalist must have extensive knowledge about any HR processes that affect the organization’s employees. Each company has its own individual requirements and responsibilities for its human resources generalists. Most large organizations have a director of human resources who manages many departments. This person usually has many years experience in the field and may specialize in employment and placement, training and development, compensation, labor relations or employee benefits. Employment managers focus on the hiring and termination process. HR departments may also include recruiters who work with the business community to find qualified candidates for open positions. Some HR departments hire people to simply interview and screen potential candidates. There also may be a vice president of human resources who is a top level executive overseeing all HR functions.

Most large organizations today employ a staff of human resource personnel to find the most qualified people to fill vacant positions. The companies are so large that top management does not have time to focus on the hiring process. So, the companies hire people who specialize in human resources, training and labor relations to act as intermediaries when hiring staff. Other functions that the HR department is expected to perform include administrative focusing on employee benefits, recruiting, interviewing and hiring. HR specialists are also expected to fully understand the company’s policies, mission statement and strategic planning functions. Large companies use their HR department staff to enhance the morale of their employees, which limits job turnover. Productivity increases when their staff feels that they have a place to go with questions and concerns. Workers become integrated with the performance of the company and business results are favorable. A reliable HR department enhances employee skills by providing ongoing training to employees. It also makes sure that the working environment is pleasant and acceptable to employees. A good HR employee must have excellent communication skills so that he or she can deal with all types of individuals in many different circumstances. There are many human resources opportunities for the right person.

The healthcare industry today is focusing on the importance of its employees and how well its human resources staff interacts with everyone in the organization itself. The industry knows that human resource management in today’s healthcare environment is essential and important. Healthcare human resources jobs are becoming more and more prevalent because healthcare facilities are now looked at closely by governmental and state agencies. These facilities are searching for HR leaders who can play a major role in shaping their organizational structure by integrating human resources with their business systems. Healthcare facilities need a human resources staff that will increase the overall performance and ultimate success of their organizations. The HR management team develops the right assessment tools and then uses surveys, focus groups and presentations as a way to determine what is missing from their HR environment. One of the most important tools that used today by many healthcare facilities is online learning that is readily available to all staff members and is sometimes a mandatory requirement. Choosing a career in the healthcare industry and focusing on human resources management is an excellent way to combine healthcare skills with business opportunities. It is a career worth discovering and exploring!
