Human resources positions include the unique specialization of HR employee relations. As an employee relations director, you will be expected to write policies, oversee employee labor relations, work with collective bargaining (if applicable), and handle employee grievances and concerns. You will need to be knowledgeable in wages, benefits, pensions and work processes so that you can convey reliable information to employees and upper management. You might even take part in contract negotiation if your business is unionized. If so, you will be asked to prepare important information for management to use in the collective bargaining process. As such, you will need to be familiar with labor laws and wage data. As the contract is being negotiated, you will be asked to interpret employee grievances, salary information, employee welfare, health and pension plans and other stipulations. Non-union shops also have employee relation specialists who work with employees on dispute resolution. This often eliminates costly litigation costs to the company. Another exciting specialization in employee relations focuses on international human resources. These specialists work with the company’s foreign operations. A final employee relations specialization focuses on information systems and requires someone who has the innate ability to process human resources information effectively.
